The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) is in the process of formulating a policy to honour honest and consistent taxpayers, PTI has reported. The identified taxpayers will be receiving a variety of public services and tax-related works on a priority basis.
This policy is being finalised by a committee which will look into the broad parameters which will be needed to implement these benefits to honest taxpayers. The Finance Ministry will examine the proposal before it is sent to the Prime Ministers Office (PMO) and the Cabinet.
The capacity of Central Processing Centre (CPC) is being enhanced to ensure that income tax filings are processed faster, and in the long run, the department plans to process them in real time. The department is also planning to set up a system where the taxpayer can be assessed electronically in any part of the country so that complaints of harassment by officials go down. Presently, a taxpayer is assessed in the city where he/she is earning.
In addition to this, the bigger plan is to provide priority services to honest taxpayers at airports, railway stations and toll booths. It is also proposed that prominent taxpayers are honoured publicly at civic receptions by the department.
