Government’s Urban Affordable Housing Scheme Inches Closer To Target, Over 88 Lakh Houses Sanctioned Since Launch

The NDA government’s urban affordable housing scheme, the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana - Urban (PMAY-U) is nearing its target of meeting the ‘Housing for All’ aim in urban areas by 2022 with over 88 lakh houses having been sanctioned under the scheme.

A total of 2.99 lakh houses have been sanctioned as part of 865 proposals from 10 states in the latest Central Sanctioning And Monitoring Committee (CSMC) meeting of for the scheme. With the approval of above fresh proposals, cumulative sanctions of houses under PMAY-U is now 88.16 lakh against a validated demand of 1.12 crore.

The latest sanction from the committee represents a total Rs 4,482 crore central assistance to the overall investment of Rs 15,109 crore across the project.

Among the states, Uttar Pradesh has the most number of houses sanctioned at 13.96 lakh while Andhra Pradesh with 12.48 lakh houses comes second. Maharastra leads the current round of houses sanctioned with 1.23 new units bringing its total to 11.2 lakh houses. Tamil Nadu meanwhile has the largest number of projects, 261, representing 52,305 houses in the current round.
