Three days after rescuing two elderly people from a van, Tamil Nadu police have uncovered a massive network of storage vaults in what appears to be a huge organ harvesting racket in Salavakkam in Kanchipuram district, 75 km from Chennai.

At the centre of this racket is a Christian NGO – St Joseph’s Hospice, which is registered under the name ‘Light for the Blind’ as a charitable trust in Tamil Nadu.

Suspicions were raised when a body wrapped in a blanket was discovered in the van from which the two elderly people were rescued along with bags of groceries. A probe that followed led to the uncovering of gruesome details on a racket being operated under the guise of helping old and aged people.

Villagers of Salavakkam had earlier accused the NGO of organ harvesting. They alleged that the bodies are kept in the vaults for three months until the body decomposes and then the bones are taken out for mysterious trading.

Even as the police investigation is on, more allegations have begun to pour in.

Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) National Secretary H Raja had earlier hinted at the organ harvesting mafia operating in the state. He, however, refused to divulge further details.
