Gujarat Chief Minister (CM) Vijay Rupani on Thursday (29 August) announced that as many as 500 new electric buses (e-buses) would ply on the roads of Ahmedabad, reports The Hindu Businessline.

Rupani said this during the flagging off ceremony of eight e-buses. The buses were flagged off by the Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who is in Gujarat for a two-day visit. The buses are operating under Ahmedabad Janmarg Ltd (AJL) - city's Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS).

At the event, Rupani asserted that Gujarat would take a lead in green mobility by implementing the usage of electric vehicles in public transport.

"We will work towards reducing emissions on roads and encourage the use of green fuels such as CNG and PNG. The state government will also work towards increasing the use of EVs by the people. In coming days, Ahmedabad city will get 500 E-buses in public transport service,” he said.

In the first phase of the project to introduce 500 electric buses to the roads of Ahmedabad, 18 such buses would be run on swappable battery technology, while 32 others would be run on fast charging technology.

It should also be noted that all the buses that were flagged off by Shah were made and designed in India, boosting the Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi's flagship Make in India programme.
