Gurugram Police Strikes Deal With Muslim Groups To Offer Namaz At 13 Places Instead Of 90

Following protests by Hindu groups over public spaces being used by Muslim groups to offer namaz, the Gurugram Police Commissionerate has struck a deal with Muslim groups in the city to restrict their prayers to 13 areas instead of the earlier 90 where police protection would be accorded, reports The Tribune. The original demand was for 15 places, but the police only approved 13 locations including the Tau Devi Lal Stadium, plots owned by the Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) and the Haryana State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation (HSIIDC) and in the Industrial Model Township (IMT), Manesar.
The approved sites will be heavily guarded by the Gurugram Police to prevent any untoward incidents. Muslim leaders have reportedly told the community to offer namaz only at these 13 locations, mosques or at their homes.
Hindu groups meanwhile have told the police that they wouldn’t protest if prayers were restricted to these areas and not offered on the road.
Last week, Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar courted controversy when he said that namaz should be offered only in mosques and not in public spaces.
