In order to ensure a safe Diwali, Uttarakhand police will regulate the sale of firecrackers and make arrangements to deal with any contingency in vulnerable areas, Times of India has reported.
Elaborate preparations are being done by the police in the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand to ensure a safe Diwali for commoners.
“Authorities in all six districts of Kumaon have been asked to implement safety measures and directives, including regulation of firecrackers,” said Rajiv Rautela, commissioner, Kumaon division.
The central government, citing safety reasons, had banned imported Chinese firecrackers in 2016.
Police have asked the firecracker shop owners to follow safety norms and keep sandbags, fire extinguishers and water buckets in their shops. Fire units will also be deployed in congested markets and vulnerable areas to deal with any contingency.
“In congested markets and other vulnerable areas, fire units are in place,” said Puran Singh Rawat, Kumaon division’s inspector-general of police.
One of the main concerns of the police is to ensure smooth traffic and to achieve this, the police have decided not to allow any parking in front of the firecracker shops.
Besides, new licenses for shops selling firecrackers will be issued on a temporary basis. Keeping in view the potential danger that these highly inflammable firecrackers pose, these shops will not be allowed to run in the centre of the city.
