In a bid to make airports more secure, the ministry of civil aviation plans to launch a biometric pass system in 2019 to track the movement of airport and airline staff, including crew members, security personnel and ground handling agents at airports, reports The Hindustan Times.
Some airports have reportedly started installing biometric card readers. Currently, both airport and airline staff carry plastic ID cards and use entry passes for access. The new biometric system is touted to be foolproof and will help authorities monitor the movement of staff in restricted areas, says the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security.
The new system will provide access to doors and access points only to authorised personnel. Each entry/exit will be logged centrally for future reference, said a civil aviation ministry official.
The biometric card readers would be installed in both entry and exit points at the airports before the system is rolled out. Reports also suggest that the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security has plans to install long-range Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) to identify vehicles at a range of about 10 metres.
