High-Ranking Catholic And Islamic Officials Oppose Legalising Same-Sex Marriage In India

The idea of same sex marriages in India has been opposed by high ranking Islamic and Catholic officials over a petition filed in the Delhi High Court, UCA News had reported.
The petition filed by Abhijit Iyer Mitra and Gita Thadani along with Madurai-based Gopi Shankar M and G Oorvasi has requested the Delhi High Court to legalise same-sex marriage under the Hindu Marriage Act.
This petition has been opposed by solicitor general Tushar Mehta. Incidentally, even Catholic and Islamic officials have also opposed the idea of legalising same-sex marriage in India.
As per UCA News, Bishop Joshua Mar Ignathios, vice-president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India has opposed same-sex marriage by arguing that the Church does not accept it.
"Indian society and law do not recognize such a concept. Homosexuality is unnatural and the Church does not accept that which is against nature because we follow what God has taught us," the Bishop has been quoted as saying.
He added that the Catholic Church neither promotes nor propagates homosexuality.
Similarly same-sex marriage has also been opposed by Mohammed Arif the chairman of the Center for Harmony and Peace.
"Same-sex marriage, homosexuality and gay culture are all Western culture, which some people think is correct, but I don’t think our society is ready to accept them at this moment", Arif has been quoted as saying.
