Under the Union government’s Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA), Utkal University has revealed plans to open six new centres of excellence at its campus in Bhubaneshwar, Odisha. The university, also known as Vani Vihar, is the oldest university in Odisha that’s still functioning.

According to the Times Of India (TOI), the six centres are as follows - Centre for Public Policy and Governance, Centre for North East Study, Centre for Informal Labour, Centre for Environment, Climate and Public Health, Global Centre for Rural Engagement, Centre for Rural Engagement and Centre for Study of Language, Literature and Culture.

This announcement comes after the Centre released Rs 40 crore to the University under the RUSA scheme. Since the University was accorded ‘A Plus’ grade by NAAC (National Assessment and Accreditation Council), it will receive Rs. 100 crore for the next three years for infrastructure development.

Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA) is a centrally-sponsored scheme that provides strategic funding to eligible state higher educational institutions. One of its objectives is to correct regional imbalances in access to higher education by setting up institutions in unserved & underserved areas.
