Himachal Pradesh: Shimla Witnesses Highest Snowfall In 15 Years; Army Rescues 73 Students Stuck In The Snow

Shimla recorded the highest snowfall on a single day in January after 15 years. According to the Director of the Meteorological office Manmohan Singh, the town recorded 44.5 cm of snowfall on 22 January, the highest in January since 2004. The maximum snow in the first month was recorded in 2004 which was 57.7 cm on 23 January.

Singh claimed that the snowfall was caused mainly due to induced cyclonic circulation with the western disturbances.

Meanwhile, in Kurfi, army jawans and the police rescued 87 people which included 73 school children who were stuck at the National Highway five for hours due to the snow

“Student who had come on a study tour had gone out to experience snowfall when their buses got stuck on snow-covered roads,” said Deputy Superintendent of Police Dinesh Kumar as reported by Hindustan Times.

The entire Kinnaur district plunged into darkness when the power supply lines got damaged due to heavy snowfall causing major inconvenience for the residents.
