Pro-democracy protestors in Hong Kong have taken over the city’s airport leading to airport authorities having to cancel flights from the airport. Air India, which has flights connecting Hong Kong also has cancelled the flights in view of the worsening situation.

India’s national carrier has begun offering full refunds on the cancelled flights and tour operators too have been waiving off cancellation charges in the sector, as reported by Economic Times.

Sharat Dhall, COO, B2C at Yatra.com said, “Air India cancelled flights and was giving a full refund. For Cathay Pacific, you can switch over to other partner carriers, which is much more traveller-friendly. We are waiving off the cancellation charges on Hong Kong flights for the next few days. We hope the situation returns to normal.”

Other flight and tour operators are also in touch with customers to update them on the status of their flights as per the report.

Hong Kong, which was handed over by Britain to China in 1997 has been witnessing an increasingly grave confrontation between the pro-democracy protestors and pro-government forces backed by China. The protestors have been holding steady at the airport even as news reports of Chinese military mobilisation at the city’s outskirts have been trickling out.
