A huge mob attacked a Hindu dominated area in Delhi’s Brijpuri on 25 February and in the process abjectly vandalising a school, shops and homes.
As per journalist Rahul Pandita, the mob comprising of around 1,000 rioters began their attack by first targeting a public school. The pictures of the aftermath show charred remains of what used to be a classroom with burnt books, desks thrown around.
The attack on the school lasted for around 3 hours. A solitary watchman guarding the school was forced to flee as the mob first committed robbery and then arson.
After destroying the school, the mob turned its attention to private shops and homes. As per eyewitnesses the mobs were armed with guns, swords and were also carrying inflammable materials. The mobs were also reportedly being supplied with fresh stones during rioting.
A devastated oil distribution shop owner Sanjay recounts how he has lost everything including his cash and daughter-in-law’s jewellery. Others affected include Virender whose house was attacked and a shop owner identified as Kapoor.
It was recently reported how a poor shopkeeper was robbed and his establishment burnt by a mob. The shopkeeper alleged that he was targeted as he is a supporter of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
