The lake in question. (Nikhilb239/Wikimedia Commons)
Famous for its iconic Gautum Buddha statue, Hyderabad’s Hussain Sagar lake was featured as ‘Jai Shri Ram Sagar’ on Google Maps between 1 and 10 October, The Hindu reports.
The heart-shaped lake fed by Musi river separates Hyderabad and Secunderabad and has several of the city’s locales including Birla Mandir located in the vicinity. Several users took to social media about the renaming which has now been reverted.
The report also mentions a similar incident in which the city’s ‘Salarjung Pul’ was termed as ‘Chhatrapati Shivaji Bridge’ earlier in February. Hyderabad Traffic Police has then removed a signpost which identified the bridge as such. A statue of the Maratha Hindu king is situated at the northern end of the bridge while the Salar Jung Museum is situated at the south.
Several geographical features of the city have disputed terminologies associated with them including the Musi river which passes through it, having been termed as ‘Muchukunda’ in an 1830 travelogue. Demands of renaming the city itself, from Hyderabad to ‘Bhagyanagar’ have been raised in the past citing the latter as its historical name.
