In a bid to ensure secure and efficient communication among fighter aircraft, the Indian Air Force (IAF) will purchase Software Defined Radios (SDR) from Israel, reports Times News Network.

The fighters which will be equipped with these imported SDRs will include the Mirage-2000, Sukhoi-30 and the Mig-29. Apart from enabling better communication between different aircraft, SDRs also enable more reliable and secure communication between aircraft and ground installations, as well as aircraft and the Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS).

If the enemy tries to jam the frequency used by the aircraft, then it can switch to a different frequency using the SDR; another game changer is that each of the side communicating with each other will get to know the exact location of the other.

The number of SDRs which will be procured as part of this acquisition will be around 400, and will allow the IAF to conduct future missions like the Balakot strikes with a much higher degree of stealth.
