A self-propelled inspection car has been rolled out by the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai, Financial Express has reported. The inspection car is fully air-conditioned.

If a locomotive is used just for the inspection car, it is deemed as a big waste of resources. It is also logistically complicated as the locomotive has to be involved in engine-reversal. Built by ICF Chennai, the inspection car has a swanky interior designed.

The inspection car has cost about Rs 4.5 crore and will be among many that will be rolled out soon. It is a norm for the zonal and divisional headquarters of the railways to make sure that level crossings, overhead equipment, tracks and stations are inspected at frequent intervals. This is aimed at providing passengers with better amenities.

The features include seating for 32 people, CCTV cameras that are externally placed, LED display at the driver’s desk, air-conditioning of the coach, WiFi, GPS-based announcement that includes a digital speed indication, bio-toilet, pantry equipment etc. The new car will be soon released for regular operations by the Indian Railways.
