ICJ Stays Jadhav’s Execution, Orders Pakistan To Do All It Needs to Ensure Same
International Court of Justice, the principal judicial organ of the United Nations.
A great respite to India as the International Court of Justice today (18 May) announced its interim verdict in the Kulbhushan Jadhav case, ordering Pakistan to take all measures to ensure Jadav’s execution doesn’t take place until the international court delivers its final judgement.
It also ordered Pakistan to keep the court updated of all the measures taken in the implementation of these orders.
India had approached the ICJ on 8 May against Pakistan’s decision of convicting Jadhav, accusing it of conducting a "farcical trial" which was in "egregious violations" of the Vienna Convention. The public hearings on the request for the indication of provisional measures by India were concluded on 15 March after which the court began its deliberation.
During the public hearing on Monday, Harish Slave, representing India, had pleaded that until the time the International Court of Justice delivers a final judgement in the Jadhav case, the world court direct Pakistan to take all measures necessary to ensure Kulbhushan Sudhir Jadhav is not executed.
The verdict that echoed India’s plea was announced after a public sitting that took place at 12 noon(The Hague time) at the Peace Palace in The Hague, during which Judge Ronny Abraham, President of the Court, read the Court’s Decision.
