Iconic United States (US) based motorcycle brand Harley Davidson is said to be close to inking a deal with India's largest two-wheeler automobile maker and seller Hero MotoCorp, reports Economic Times.

This comes after Harley Davidson had announced on Thursday (24 September) that it shall stop the sales of its motorcycles in India and shut its manufacturing plant after a decade of unsuccessful efforts to make a presence in the market.

The deal between Harley Davidson and Hero MotoCorp will allow the latter the right to import and sell former's motorcycles as its sole distributor. Discussions are also said to be ongoing over the possibility of Hero MotoCorp getting to serve as a contract manufacturer of at least one of Harley Davidson motorcycles with an engine capacity in the range of 300-600 cc. Also, Harley Davidson's 33 extant dealerships will also likely begin to function under Hero MotoCorp under the deal.

Hero MotoCorp which manufactured 6.4 million two-wheeler scooters and motorcycles in the year ending March 2020, accounted for a third of the nation's total output. It typically sells motorcycles with engine capacity of under 200 cc and a deal with Harley Davidson is likely to give a fillip to Hero's presence in the mid and high-engine market.
