IIT Council Considering Proposal To Allow Academically Weak Students To Leave In Three Years With B.Sc. Degree

If a proposal put forward by the Union HRD Ministry is accepted by the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), then students enrolled at these premier engineering colleges may soon have the option to opt out after three years with a simple B.Sc. (Engineering) degree, reports Business Standard.
This proposal is specifically aimed at academically weak students, who will be able to leave with a degree in hand after just completing six semesters, while the B.Tech degree requires eight semesters to be completed as a it is a four-year course.
The IIT council which represents these 23 universities is at present examining the proposal. If they accept it then it can be implemented from the current academic year itself.
This proposal comes amidst increasing concerns about the high attrition rate which plagues most IITs; in just the last two years the number of dropouts (in both undergraduate and postgraduate courses) from the institutes was 2,461. One of the biggest reasons for so many students dropping out is their poor academic performance.
