IIT Kharagpur Joins Hands With Jindal Stainless Limited To Introduce Credit Course On Stainless Steel

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur has joined hands with India’s largest stainless steel manufacturer Jindal Stainless Limited (JSL) to introduce a course on stainless steel and advanced ferrous alloys, The Economic Times reports.

The 3-credit course would be introduced in both undergraduate and post-graduate curriculum in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering. The course would commence as an elective from the autumn semester would intake 50-60 students in the first batch, a joint statement from the institute and JSL said.

The course will include the study of stainless steel, uniqueness of its various grades, determination of life-cycle cost, behavioural and forming characteristics, understanding of applications along with the study of different ferrous alloys.

Abhyuday Jindal, MD at JSL, said: “With IIT Kharagpur’s support, this course will instil a sense of innovation in the students and motivate them to embrace sustainable solutions in the future.”

The curriculum of the course also includes field visits to JSL’s manufacturing units in Hisar and Pathredi in Haryana offering students real-time exposure of fabrication of stainless steel. There would be three lectures every week and would last four months.
