Improving Higher Education: Delhi Government To Start Two New Universities In The National Capital

The Delhi government has proposed two new universities in the national capital in a step towards strengthening higher education and to increase the interests of students in skill-based courses.
The new universities that will be opened in the national capital will include a University of Applied Sciences. The other new proposed university would reportedly be for teachers’ training.
Manish Sisodia, Minister of Finance of Delhi, keeping the budget share for the education sector over 25 per cent for 2019-20, said that the University of Applied Sciences would help to change the way people see the professional courses, reports Hindustan Times.
The University of Applied Sciences would offer courses from the modular of three months to the PhD and M.Phil level while the second varsity would train teachers.
“There is no university for applied sciences in the country now. Due to this, the interest of students in skill-based institutes such as ITI, Polytechnic remains low. To resolve this, and to set a new benchmark for applied sciences, the Delhi government will start a ‘University of Applied Sciences’. There will be programmes for vocational education of three to 12 months in various trades, certificate courses of one to two years, diplomas, degrees, postgraduate courses, MPhil and PhD programmes,” Sisodia said, as reported by Hindustan Times.
