In a news that will provide some respite to millions of flood-affected people and for personnel involved in rescue operations, the Meteorological Department predicted that rain fury in Kerala is likely to subside as the low-pressure area formed over the Bay of Bengal, the shores of West Bengal and Odisha is now moving towards the eastern Vidarbha and nearby regions, Matrubhumi has reported.
Torrential rain and floods have devastated several parts of Kerala, claiming close to a 100 lives. As per reports, the worst-affected areas are Aluva in Kochi and Aranmula in Pathanamthitta. A red alert has been sounded in all districts of the state except Kasaragod. The popular tourist destination of Munnar is said to be completely isolated.
On Thursday evening, owing to the marooning of runway and tarmac, Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) decided to suspend all its operations till 2 pm on 26 August.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Kerala this evening to take stock of the flood situation in the state. The prime minister also spoke with Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan this morning.
“We discussed the flood situation across the state and reviewed rescue operations”, said Modi, who has been in touch with Vijayan for the past two days.
