Bharti Airtel has become the first telco to begin deploying 4G services in the Andaman and Nicobar islands and connecting the island to India’s digital superhighway, Telecom Talk reports.

The launch of 4G services in the archipelago will give its residents access to digital services of Airtel like HD video streaming, super fast uploading and downloading and much more.

MP Bishu Pada Ray and Secretary of the Department of Telecom, Aruna Sundararajan formally launched the 4G service in an unconventional yet fitting-to-the-occasion method by a 4G Video Call.

Aruna Sundararajan said the latest connectivity services to the islands was yet another significant milestone in the path to fulfilling the vision of a digitally connected India.

“I congratulate the team at Airtel for taking the lead in rolling out these services in such remote locations and bringing the benefits of mobile broadband to citizens. We assure the industry of continued support in their efforts to provide broadband access to every Indian”, she added.

In the beginning, the 4G services will only be limited to Port Blair, before gradually expanding to the island. Airtel subscribers on the island will be able to switch their existing SIM cards to the latest 4G-enabled SIM card at no extra cost and will be able to use dongles and hotspots as well. Airtel subscribers can also recharge their numbers with either prepaid plans or postpaid plans.

“We are delighted to launch the first 4G service in Andaman and Nicobar and contribute towards building a truly digitally empowered India,” Gopal Vittal, MD & CEO (India and South Asia) of Bharti Airtel said, while thanking the DoT and the local government for their help.

Back in 2005, Airtel was the first telco to provide telecom service in the islands.
