In Karnataka, Only One In 100 Cases Of Sexual Assault Ends In Conviction

Most cases of sexual assault against women in Karnataka end up with no punishment, data released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) has revealed. According to IndiaSpend.org, not more than one in 100 cases registered in Karnataka under Section 354 of the Indian Penal Code ended in a conviction in the year 2015. The national record, on the other hand, is better than Karnataka’s, with at least 10 in 100 cases ending in conviction of the accused.
Of 5,112 cases registered under Section 354 in 2015 in Karnataka, only 69 or around 1.3 per cent ended in conviction. Only 107 or 1.2 per cent of the 9,118 persons arrested in these cases were convicted.
Compared to this, over 8,408 cases or 10 per cent of the 82,422 cases of sexual assault were registered across India ended in conviction. Over 11,342 persons or around 11 per cent of 101,571 persons arrested for these attacks were convicted.
In the year 2015, the number of cases under this section rose by 92 per cent to 82,422 from 42,968 in 2011. Rate of conviction, which stood at 16 per cent in 2011, declined to 10 per cent in 2015. According to the website, Maharashtra reported the most sexual assaults (11,713), followed by Madhya Pradesh (8,049) and Uttar Pradesh (7,885) in 2015.
