Fugitive diamantaire Nirav Modi may soon be extradited to India as the Home Secretary of United Kingdom (UK) Sajid Javid has certified New Delhi’s request for his extradition, officials involved with proceedings confirmed on Saturday (9 March) reports Economic Times.

Modi is wanted in the Rs 13,500 crore Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud case. He was reportedly tracked living openly in a swanky 8 million pound apartment in London’s West End apartment and running a new diamond business.

According to the report, the paperwork for extraditing the fugitive businessman, under the extradition treaty agreements between India and UK, is now with the District Judge at Westminster Magistrates’s Court in London for issuance of an extradition warrant against Modi to be executed by Scotland Yard.

The Indian authorities were reportedly made aware of the development on Thursday (7 March). According to the officials the arrest warrant against Modi, that will move the extradition request to the next stage, could now be expected in a matter of weeks.

Earlier, UK daily The Telegarph had tracked down Modi to an 8 million pound, three-bedroom apartment “occupying half of a floor of the landmark Centre Point tower block” in London’s West End, with views across the city.

The report said that Modi, “is now involved in a new diamond business run from an office in Soho”, and has been given a National Insurance number by the UK Department for Work & Pensions”.

India, in August last year, had handed extradition request documents for the fugitive businessman, which have been under consideration by the UK government since then.
