Bogged by heavy losses and in a view to better the financial strength of the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC), Chief Minister (CM) HD Kumaraswamy said on Wednesday (26 June) that his government was considering handing over 1,000 air conditioned Volvo buses being operated by BMTC to other state owned transport corporations, reports The Hindu.

The buses can be handed over to the North Eastern Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (NEKRTC), the North Western Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (NWKRTC) or the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC).

Elaborating on the plan, Kumaraswamy asserted that the buses can be profitable only if they run 150-200 kms a day, which is not practically possible in Bengaluru city. While making the plan public, CM Kumaraswamy was also joined by Minister for Tourism Affairs Sa Ra Mahesh and Minister for Animal Husbandry & Fisheries and Raichur In-charge Venkatarao Nadagouda were present.

Kumaraswamy also informed the gathered mediapersons that the JDS-Congress combined government in the state was planning to purchase 3,000 new buses to revive the different state run transport corporations.
