In a major developemnt, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) is going to convert its “Trauma Centre building” into a COVID-19 hospital to counter the growing threat of coronavirus in the country, reports Livemint.

The AIIMS administration will soon make an official announcement regarding the same.

The trauma center which mostly deals with the treatment of road accident victims, will now be a dedicated COVID-19 hospital and at per reports 18 beds will be added to the current 242 beds in the trauma centre taking the tally to 260 beds.

The Hospital has also closed its OPD, including speciality services and all new and follow-up patients registration, from 24 March till further orders. Also, all non-essential elective procedures and surgeries have been postponed and only emergency life-saving surgeries will be allowed.

An AIIMS source said, "The entire trauma casualty and the emergency is being shifted to the AIIMS' main emergency. Most of the patients have already been shifted to multiple wards at the main AIIMS hospital."

The converted COVID-19 hospital will have about 50 ICU beds and around 30-40 beds in the high-dependency unit with close to 70 ventilators.

India’s premier medical institute has also set up a task force to develop a management protocol for COVID-19 and have constituted several important committees for rapid response to any challenge in the ensuing days.
