According to the recently released Ericsson Mobility Report, India is expected to have 1.42 billion (142 crores) mobile subscribers by 2024 and over 80 per cent of them will have access to 4G mobile data, Money Control has reported.

The report also stated that 5G would reach over 40 per cent of the global population. While China added the highest number of net mobile subscribers in third quarter of 2018 (37 million), India was a close second at 31 million subscribers. Indonesia followed the two with 13 million net additions.

The report also added that subscription penetration in India was 87 per cent with regions like China, North America and Europe already have over 100 per cent subscription penetration.

“The number of mobile subscriptions exceeds the population in many countries, which is largely due to inactive subscriptions, multiple device ownership or optimisation of subscriptions for different types of calls,” the report said.

North America has the highest monthly data usage, reaching 8.6 gigabytes (GB) of monthly consumption by the end of 2018. The report also highlights that India’s mobile data usage is higher than that of Middle East and Africa, Latin America and South-East Asia and Oceania.
