India has initiated the process for establishing a Guru Nanak chair in a UK university in the midlands region as one of the steps to mark the 550th birth anniversary celebrations of the founder of Sikhism, Guru Nanak Dev, reports Hindustan Times.

The announcement was made by the Indian High Commissioner Ruchi Ghanshyam during an event at Cardiff, Wales. The midlands region has been chosen since it is home to a sizeable minority following the Sikh faith.

The event at Cardiff was conducted in association with several gurdwaras from the area, as well as the Sikh Council of Wales.

Apart from the Guru Nanak Chair, the diplomat also observed that other steps had been taken in advance of the 550th birth anniversary of the Sikh guru, such as the Kartarpur corridor, special trains connecting towns and holy sites which were connected with Guru Nanak, as well as commemorative stamps issued by the government.

The event at Cardiff was attended by a number of important British dignitaries and was widely telecast to as many as 106 countries by the Sikh Channel.
