In light of the planned induction of six Scorpene-class submarines, which are presently under construction at a Mazgaon facility, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) is moving forward with plans to set up a submarine repair facility, reports Sputnik News.
A $57.59 million contract for the same has reportedly been signed with French company Thales.
The submarines are expected to be inducted in the navy by 2022.
The facility will come up at a site off the eastern coast, with Indian technicians receiving training from Thales on how to handle equipment for the repair work on the Scorpene-class submarines.
The production of these Scorpene-class submarines it taking place at the Mazgaon Dock Limited (MDL) facility with technical inputs being provided by French naval shipbuilding firm Naval Group, previously called DCNS.
The first boat was delivered only in December 2017 by MDL, even though as per the initial schedule the first induction was to take place in 2012.
Two more Scorpene-class units will enter service in 2019, with one more each year afterwards till 2022. The Indian Navy expects to have a minimum of 18 operational submarines by that year, including eight of indigenous manufacture.
