Indian Railways’ parcel business is set to receive a major boost after bringing in e-commerce platform Amazon to transport goods via trains, reports the Financial Express.
The Railway Board issued a letter stating that the national transporter under the pilot project will give Amazon space in two of its premium trains- Sealdah Rajdhani Express and the Mumbai Rajdhani Express for one month. Depending on the feedback, the period can be extended to three months.
Indian Railway zones will earmark a space of 2.5 tonnes in the parcel van of the train to load and unload the consignments of Amazon India. The remaining space of 1.5 tonnes has been set aside for the Railways, PTI reports.
The e-commerce giant will pay freight charges equal to the highest lease rate on the same train on the basis of pro-rata. Further, railways will levy a month’s advance freight charge on amazon, the agreement between the two states.
The Bharatiya Railway loading, unloading workers union allege that the latest move would cost them their livelihood. In a bid to protest against the same, the union had called for a two-day strike on 31 July and 1 August.
