Mobile app company Truecaller has had a data breach and the consumer information is being sold on the internet, Entracker reports. Sources said consumer’s email, phone number and address details are sold for 2,000 Euros for Indian users and 25,000 Euros for global users.
The Stockholm based company helps users identify the number and name associated whenever they receive an anonymous call or a call which is not in their contact list.
Around 60 to 70 per cent of Truecaller’s user base of 140 million users are Indian. Further, the app also Unified Payment Interface (UPI) for its Indian users along with premium pay subscription.
Truecaller, however, has denied any such breach and assured that no sensitive user information is stolen, accessed or extracted especially that of the financial or payment details.
The company also said that it had suspended many user accounts suspected of having abused access to its platform. It has marked those accounts, and daily limits are put in place on the number of searches a user can do in a day.
Update: As per an official statement issued by Truecaller, the company initiated an investigation into the matter and concluded that there was no security breach. It added that the data of the users is secure and safety measures have been put in place to prevent data abuse.
