Hindi maintained its top spot amongst the most spoken Indian language in the United States, followed by Telugu and Gujarati reports The Times of India.

In terms of percentage, Telugu saw a staggering rise of 86 per cent as per data released by American Community Survey (ACS), US census bureau 2017. The data comes with an interesting fact that 21.8 per cent of US residents speak a language other than English at home.

8.63 lakh speak Hindi, 4.34 lakh speak Gujarati, and 4.15 lakh speak Telugu. An anti-immigrant think-tank, Centre of Immigration (CIS), has analysed data which says Telugu speaking population saw an exponential rise of 86 per cent while Hindi and Gujarati saw a rise of 42 and 22 per cent respectively.

Reports from TOI reflect that 26.1 lakh of the US population was born in India. 33 per cent of Indians speak Hindi, 17 per cent Gujarati and Telugu. Tamil and Bengali were not in the top three Indian languages, but the number of people speaking the languages has increased by 57 and 55 per cent respectively.

The rise in Telugu speaking population saw a surge because of the significant increase in employees in the technology sector.
