After Gujarat state assembly passed a bill, the state will now get India’s first Biotechnology University in India reports The Hindu Business Line.
In a bid to boost research, innovation and entrepreneurship in the sector. Touted to be a world-class university it will be a research-focused academic institution and will train and equip biotech scientists in product-focused research to create and deliver a strong line of products in the country.
Biotechnology university will have a world-class infrastructure, an intellectual property base and skill sets for training, education, research, product development and technology commercialisation in biotechnology and allied sciences.
The Bill presented in the Gujarat state assembly for the proposed university provides a framework to facilitate intellectual property and matters related to technology commercialisation for products. It will also identify critical issues in the field of biotechnology and develop a workforce with specific skill sets to meet industry requirements.
The State government had earlier conducted a survey of more than 600 students and before coming out with a Bill. A need for practice-based curriculum for the students in advanced biotechnology tools and techniques was concluded from the survey.
To create a robust Biotechnology ecosystem in the State, the government has established the Gujarat Biotechnology Research Centre, Gujarat State Biotechnology Mission and The Savli Technology and Business Incubator.
