India’s First Ever Solar Bicycle Corridor To Come Up In Delhi By March 2019

The Economic Times has reported that India will be getting its first ever solar bicycle track corridor by March 2019. It will run on both sides of the road in a 12 km stretch from Mukarba Chowk to Wazirabad on Delhi’s Outer Ring Road.
The project will be able to generate 6 mega watt of clean electricity when the corridor becomes entirely operational. The Public Works Department (PWD) will be in charge of the execution, which falls under the 26-point green budget scheme. Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi Manish Sisodia said that he is hopeful that the project will curb pollution in the city.
The multi-purpose project will shelter cyclists from rain and sunlight, while also reducing carbon emissions from coal power plants. Partly, the electricity generated will be used for powering streetlights and the rest of the infrastructure, and the surplus would be supplied to the grid.
PWD hopes to recover the entire project cost in five years, by selling unused electricity. There will be ample space for the footpath and the cycle-track.
A tender for the project will be floated by October, and work will be awarded by the end of 2018. The government expects the work to start by January, and reach completion by March 2019.
