The Mukesh Ambani led telecommunication service provider Reliance Jio, has reportedly planned to provide 4G LTE-based voice and data services in remote villages through satellite linkage.
According to Business Standard, the company has awarded a contract to the American firm Huges Communication, a satellite-based internet and TV service provider. Jio has planned to use the capacity from ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation) and technology from Huges to enable connectivity in villages and remote areas, where telecom network is still hard to find.
The company is planning for the solution to be implemented around 400 remote areas in India. This includes hilly areas, remote villages and islands, where a conventional tower-system is not entirely a feasible idea due to the geography of the location and certain territorial limitations. This will also help Jio save cost on expanding its footprint and last-mile network.
Jio will become the first service-provider to shell out 4G LTE network using this technology.
According to the report, Jio is planning to set up stations at Mumbai and Nagpur. Additionally, two mini-hubs will be set-up at Leh and Port Blair. This will increase connectivity in J&K, islands of Andaman and Nicobar, Uttarakhand, Lakshadweep.
