Indic Academy is hosting a talk by Meenakshi Jain on her books, Sati and Rama & Ayodhya, this Saturday, 17 December, in Chennai.

About Meenakshi Jain

Meenakshi Jain is an Indian political scientist and historian who is sympathetic to Hindu revivalism and Hindu nationalism. She is the daughter of journalist Girilal Jain, who retired as editor of the Times of India.

Jain received her PhD in political science from the University of Delhi. Her thesis on the social base and relations between caste and politics was published in 1991. She also worked as a fellow at the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library. Currently, she is an associate professor of history at Gargi College, affiliated to the University of Delhi. In December 2014, Jain was nominated to receive membership of the Indian Council of Historical Research by the Narendra Modi government.


Jain is the author of the controversial history textbook Medieval India published by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) during the National Democratic Alliance government to replace the previous textbook authored by Romila Thapar.

After making history with her book on the Ayodhya controversy, Rama and Ayodhya (2013), Jain has added to her reputation with the present hefty volume Sati: Evangelicals, Baptist Missionaries, and the Changing Colonial Discourse.
