Chennai’s infrastructure get big boost as Nitin Gadkari-led Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has got the ball rolling on the stalled elevated expressway project between Chennai Port and Maduravoyal, reports The Hindu.

Construction of the Rs 1,815-crore expressway had begun in 2010. However, the same was put on the burner in 2012 after certain objections had been raised against its alignment, throwing the project into disarray. By then about 20 per cent of the work on the project had already been completed.

The NHAI is now set to revive the project by calling in bids to develop the 20.2 kilometres (KMs) expressway with a new alignment. The state government has also thrown its weight behind the project by getting rid of as many as 1,500 of the 1,700 encroachments along the project's alignment which were hindering the project's progress.

It should also be noted that the expressway which was earlier supposed to be of four lanes would now be built to be a six-lane structure. Further, it would also be connected to the proposed Bangalore-Chennai expressway.
