In an attempt to consolidate efforts and resources against heavyweights Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Trinamool Congress (TMC) in West Bengal, interim Congress party president Sonia Gandhi has green-lighted an alliance with the Left Front in the eastern state for soon to-be-held Assembly by-polls, reports The Hindu.

The announcement of the alliance between Congress and the Left comes after both the parties failed to register any significance in the Lok Sabha contestation in which 42 constituencies of West Bengal were up for grabs.

Gandhi met with the West Bengal Congress president Somen Mitra on Friday night, during which she was apprised about the seat adjustment Mitra had worked out with the Left Front.

It should be noted that prior to the Lok Sabha elections, Left Front and Congress had decided to contest the elections separately as the talks about coming together and contesting as a Mahagathbandhan had failed at the last moment on the grounds of differences with regards to seat sharing agreement.
