The government is looking into using electric power cables to transmit internet data, a senior official said on Tuesday (29 January), reports Financial Express.

As per Education and Research Network (ERNET) India Director General Neena Pahuja, different alternatives like the vast network of power cable lines can be be used to send data.

Pahuja though added that the internet would not be high-speed in nature but would provide nominal speeds to ensure basic level of connectivity for the masses. This mechanism would mainly be used in areas with a low penetration of internet connectivity.

“That’s the kind of convergence we have already begun working on,” said while speaking at Convergence India event.

ERNET India is an autonomous scientific society under the administrative control of Ministry of Information Technology.

R S Sharma, chairman of Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), said that there are massive opportunities to be utilised in building data networks, hence there is a need to implement a different way of connecting people.

Sharma said that fibre is just one way of establishing connectivity and when it comes to remote regions of the country, it is necessary to explore alternatives. He stated that cable television can be one of the most efficient ways to increase internet penetration in India’s remote corners.
