A committee of The International Criminal Police Organization, more popularly known as Interpol, has taken up for consideration India’s request that a ‘red notice’ be issued against controversial Islamic preacher, Dr Zakir Naik, reports Times Now News.

A red notice is a request which goes out to the 194 countries which are members of Interpol to find out the location of, and provisionally take into custody, fugitives from the law wanted in a particular country.

Naik faces charges of money laundering, hate speech and other offences in India. The Islamic preacher left India following a terror attack in Dhaka in 2016, as the attackers claimed to have been admirers of Naik.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) is seeking for Naik to be declared an international fugitive so that he can be brought back to India and prosecuted. The meeting regarding India’s request was held by the Commission for the Control of Interpol’s Files (CCF) on 19 April.

He is currently based in Malaysia, where he has also received permanent residency. India has already requested the Malaysian government to extradite him but the request has been pending since January 2018. In July 2018 Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad remarked that Naik would not face deportation till the time he did not cause problems in Malaysia.
