At its annual developer conference in San Francisco, Samsung took the wraps off its recent technological breakthrough. The device, which had been subjected countless rumours in the past few years, has a 7.3-inch flexible display and runs Android, Wired has reported. The company did not announce the price, tech specifications or even the launch date.

Samsung first showed off the concept of a foldable display way back in 2014, and it had started using OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diodes) displays in its flagship phones in the early 2010s. On 7 November, the new foldable smartphone was the culmination of years of persistent research and design efforts.

“When it's open, it's a tablet offering a big-screen experience. When closed, it's a phone that fits neatly inside your pocket,” said Justin Denison, Samsung's SVP of mobile product marketing. Even Google has announced its full support to make Android compatible with foldable displays.

However, Samsung is not the only one working on foldable displays. Companies like Lenovo, Huawei, and LG are all locked in the race to launch the first foldable phone in the market.
