‘It Can Give Birth To Lust’: Darul Uloom Deoband Issues Fatwa Against Maternal Uncle Carrying Bride To Palanquin

Darul Uloom Deoband, the Lucknow based Islamic seminary has issued a fatwa banning the custom of the bride being carried to the palanquin by her maternal uncle.
The fatwa states that the bride, carried to the palanquin by the male members of her family can “give birth to lust”.
As per the fatwa, a man lifting his fully grown niece is not acceptable in the eyes of the Muslim law. It claimed that a danger of such relationship’s destruction always looms if this activity leads to the birth of lust in either of the two. It thus instructed that it would be ideal for the bride’s mother to accompany her to the palanquin.
A Muzaffarnagar-based man had raised this query which prompted the response.
The Deoband also stated that the practice of ‘Lal Khat’, common in Islamic weddings was a foreign concept borrowed from “non-Islamic beliefs”. ‘Lal Khat’ is a decorated wedding invitation card that the bride’s side sends to the groom’s side. The Islamic seminary, however, says, “ Instead, it should be a normal letter or postcard or intimation by a phone call. This activity must be abandoned.”
