All India Jat Aarakshan Sangharsh Samiti (AIJASS) led by Yashpal Malik has announced to relaunch the stir for Jat quota in education and jobs from 29 January. Other groups will also participate. They had suspended their agitation after the Manohar Lal Khattar government had promised to table the bill in the assembly last year including Jats in the OBC category.

But now they are accusing the chief minister and the central government of reneging on their promise.

The State assembly had passed the bill giving reservation to Jats and five other castes by creating a separate category of backward classes. However, the Punjab and Haryana High Court had put the quota on hold.

After almost a year of lull, the Jat groups will resume their agitation. This may put the BJP in a fix as it is vying for the votes of Jats in western Uttar Pradesh. With Congress-SP alliance sealed, the BJP cannot afford to lose their support. Sensing this opportunity, the groups want to press their demands hoping for a favourable outcome.

Haryana’s Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Muhammad Akil has assured that preparations are being made to not let the repeat of last year’s violence happen that had engulfed the state. The Haryana Police have also cancelled leaves of all cops till further notice.
