Police in Channi Himmat area of Jammu have raided and seized Rs 30 lakh from some Rohingya families living in Narwal, near Sunjwan military camp, several media houses have reported.

News agency United News of India (UNI) has quoted an unnamed police official as saying, “The amount recovered is around Rs 30 lakh, and it has been seized from the Rohingya families settled illegally here in Channi Himmat area and Rani Talab area on the city’s outskirts.” The police officer told the agency that the culprits who brought the money are absconding, but their families have been detained.

Dainik Jagran has quoted senior superintendent of police (SSP) Vivek Gupta as saying that a raid was carried out after the police received a tip-off. When the police seized lakhs in cash from a camp and questioned the residents, they confessed that their relatives living in Kiryani Talab, also are in possession of a lot of money.

The police are investigating how they got such a lot of money and for what purpose. The Dainik Jagran report claims that the authorities suspect the role of terrorists in providing these funds.

Notably, a terror attack was carried out at Sunjwan military station in Narwal on February 10, after which fingers were pointed at illegal settlement of Rohingyas around the camp.

In a ground report, Swarajya had earlier reported that Rohingyas in various camps in Jammu are surprisingly flourishing and have mysteriously owned properties including big and small commercial establishments.

A Crime Investigation Department (CID) officer had told Swarajya that Rohingyas have managed to buy state land ,and in one case, a Rohingya was found possessing a bungalow worth two crores.

The police have not ruled out the possibility of some Rohingyas being linked with terror groups.
