Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan.
Former actress Jaya Prada who had contested the Lok Sabha polls in May from the Rampur constituency on a BJP ticket, has filed a plea before the Allahabad High Court against Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Azam Khan’s election from the seat, reports India Today.
The petition firstly alleges that when the election occurred, Khan was enjoying an office of profit as the chancellor of Mohammad Ali Jauhar University. Secondly, it argues that during his campaign, Khan had appealed to voters on the basis of religion.
Veteran politician from Azamgarh, Amar Singh, was seen with Jaya Prada when the petition was being filed at the court registry. A bench will soon be nominated by the Chief Justice to adjudicate the matter.
Khan had attracted controversy at the time of his campaign as well for allegedly telling his supporters that Jaya Prada wore “Khaki underpants”. The remark was widely condemned at the time with the National Commission of Women calling for the Election Commission to take action against Khan.
