Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) Bar Association (JKHCBA) has drawn heat and legal notices after it termed Kashmir a "disputed territory", reports Times of India.

The body has been barred from holding any elections until it clarifies its position on terming Kashmir a disputed territory.

District Magistrate (DM) Shahid Iqbal Choudhary has issued three notices to the bar association's president asking him to explain its Constitution which terms Kashmir as aforementioned. The body has been directed to submit its relevant documents to Srinagar's Deputy Commissioner. These include the article of association and registration papers.

The notice sent by DM Choudhary states that the bar association's position on the subject is not in consonance with the Constitution of India whereby J&K is an integral part of the nation and not a dispute. The notice also emphasised that the bar association's assertion was in conflict with The Advocates Act of 1961.

DM Choudhary has also imposed Section 144 of the CrPC in the premises of the district court complex in Srinagar so as to avoid any law and order escalations.
