High-speed internet will continue to remain suspended across the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir till 26 March, a government notification said on Tuesday (17 March).

The directions/restrictions contained in the government order on 4 March will continue to remain operative till 26 March, the notification issued by Principal Secretary Shaleen Kabra on Tuesday said, adding that the decision has been made in the interest of the sovereignty and integrity of India, the security of the state and for maintaining public order.

The home department said the decision was taken “on consideration of the overall security and the reports of the law enforcement agencies inter-alia bringing out the necessity of speed related restrictions on mobile data services to prevent misuse of social media applications, as also taking note of recent terror activities, and non assessment of the available alternatives”, reports Indian Express.

After seven months, the ban on the internet in J&K was lifted on 4 March, and it was restored in a phased manner across the UT. However, high speed internet continues to remain suspended.
