After three Congress state unit presidents submitted their resignations to party president Rahul Gandhi, who, according to some reports, may have himself offered to resign at the Congress Working Committee’s meeting yesterday, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath has offered to step down from his position as Congress chief in the state, reports The New Indian Express.

"Kamal Nath has offered to resign from the post of Madhya Pradesh Congress committee president," said Congress general secretary Deepak Babaria.

The announcement comes in the aftermath of the party’s drubbing in the Lok Sabha polls in Madhya Pradesh, where it was only able to come out ahead on one seat out of 29, with the rest going to the BJP. The collapse was part of a wider nationwide as the party could only manage to win 52 seats.

The only seat where the Congress came out ahead was Chhindwara, where the chief minister’s own son Nakul Nath was able to win his father’s old seat.

It is also believed that the party’s poor performance in the general elections may affect its ability to maintain its majority in some states where it is in the government. As per some sources Nath did not attend the working committee’s meet yesterday as he was preoccupied with keeping his party’s lawmakers together.
