Karnataka: After A Wait Of Five Long Days, Trust Vote Finally Begins In State Assembly

After a long wait of almost five days, Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy finally sought the division of votes as part of the trust vote proceedings.
As a result, assembly speaker K R Ramesh Kumar ordered the closure of the assembly doors so that the proceedings could finally begin. The speaker has decided to abstain from the trust vote, citing the dignity of the chair.
The trust vote was initially scheduled to take place on Thursday (18 July) but kept on getting delayed due to long-drawn discussions spearheaded by Congress and JD(S) MLAs.
Ahead of seeking a division of votes, an emotional Kumaraswamy had claimed that he was ready to resign as Chief Minister. As things stand, the Congress-JD(S) government does not have the required numbers to prove majority thanks to 15 odd rebels from the party who are currently holed up in Mumbai.
As a result, many expressed surprise over Kumaraswamy not deciding to step down prior to the trust vote.
