Karnataka: Another Wicket Down For JD(S)-Congress Coalition As Lone BSP Minister Quits

Primary and Secondary Education Minister of Karnataka N Mahesh submitted his resignation on Thursday (11 October) to Chief Minister (CM) H D Kumaraswamy. The resignation has come a week after Mayawati’s exit from the Mahaghatbandhan, or the Congress-led alliance against the BJP for several upcoming state elections.
N Mahesh is the only BSP MLA in Karnataka with the Bahujan Samaj Party being in a pre-poll alliance with the JD(S) for the 2018 assembly elections in Karnataka.
N Mahesh, who won from Kollegala constituency in Chamarajanagara was given the ministerial berth as a result of a promise made to their alliance partner. On 3 October, BSP Supremo Mayawati informed the media that her party will be fighting elections alone in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh. This has upset the Congress party, Bangalore Mirror reported.
CM Kumaraswamy said that Mayawati might have told Mahesh to quit from the ministry. In his letter of resignation however, Mahesh said that he is resigning due to personal reasons. There are reports that suggest that Mayawati’s dependency on Mahesh to run the state BSP unit has led her to take this decision. MLCs representing the teachers constituency have been reportedly unhappy with the way Mahesh conducts himself within the inner circles.
Mahesh, however, said that he will be campaigning for JD(S) candidates in the Lok Sabha elections.
